Pennsylvania's dairy industry took center stage as Governor Josh Shapiro and Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding visited Reinford Farms in Juniata County. The purpose of their visit was to promote the state's dairy industry and shed light on the governor's proposed budget measures aimed at supporting farmers and small businesses.
Reinford Farms, a multigenerational farm spanning 1,300 acres, currently houses 750 milking cows and 800 young cattle. It serves as an excellent example of how Pennsylvania farmers are embracing innovative technology to enhance their operations.
Governor Shapiro's budget includes several investments to bolster Pennsylvania's $132 billion agriculture industry. Key proposals include allocating $13.8 million to fully fund the Pennsylvania Farm Bill for the fifth consecutive year, investing $1 million in establishing a new Organic Center of Excellence, allocating $500,000 for a Center for Plant Excellence, and providing $2.5 million for the Farmland Preservation Program.
The dairy industry in Pennsylvania plays a vital role, supporting over 53,000 jobs and contributing more than $14 billion to the state's economy. Governor Shapiro emphasized the importance of partnering with dairy farmers to position Pennsylvania as a leader in dairy production and sustainable farming.
During the tour, Governor Shapiro and Secretary Redding observed Reinford Farms' de-packaging and food recycling operations, which employ an anaerobic methane digester to dispose of food waste in an environmentally friendly manner. This innovative system combines food waste and farm manure to generate heat and electricity, providing ample energy to power the entire farm.
A thriving dairy industry in Pennsylvania benefits all residents, as it sustains jobs, supports communities, and ensures the availability of wholesome, high-quality dairy products. The visit to Reinford Farms showcased the commitment to fostering agricultural excellence and innovation in the state.
