The U.S Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) estimated 275 thousand acres of winter wheat planted area in Pennsylvania for 2022, up 2% from last year, according to King Whetstone, director of the USDA's NASS, Northeastern Regional Field Office. This is the highest recorded planted acreage in the Commonwealth since 1976. Area harvested is estimated at 210,000 acres, up 8% from 2021.
Following up to the Prospective Plantings report released in late spring, NASS surveyed approximately 9,100 segments of land and 64,200 farm operators during the first two weeks of June to gather information on what farmers actually planted.
Key findings released in the Acreage report include:
Corn
- Corn planted area for all purposes in 2022 is estimated at 1.23 million acres, down 8% from last year.
- Corn harvested for grain in 2022 is estimated at 885 thousand acres, down 11% from last year.
Soybean
- Soybean planted area for 2022 is estimated at 600 thousand acres, unchanged from 2021.
- Soybean area harvested for 2022 is estimated at 595 thousand acres, unchanged from 2021.
All Hay
- Growers expect to harvest 1.40 million acres of hay, up 15% from last year.
- Other hay is estimated at 1.00 million acres, up 11% from 2021.
- Alfalfa hay is estimated at 400 thousand acres, up 25% from last year.
Tobacco
- Tobacco harvested area for 2022 is estimated at 5,300 acres, down 1% from 2021.
