Pennsylvania State Grange Marks 150th Anniversary as a Champion for Agriculture and Rural Communities

The Pennsylvania State Grange, a revered fraternal organization committed to advancing agriculture, rural development, and community engagement, proudly celebrates its momentous 150th anniversary in 2023. The commemoration of this significant milestone was highlighted during a media event held on June 13, with the grand backdrop of the Rotunda at the state Capitol.

Matt Espenshade, Pennsylvania State Grange master, expressed gratitude to Grange members and legislators in attendance. He reflected on the organization's journey since its establishment in 1873, emphasizing its remarkable growth in influence, becoming a prominent voice for the farming community in Pennsylvania.

Dignitaries present at the event, including Gregory Hostetter, executive deputy secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, reiterated the value of the Grange and the department's unwavering support for the organization. Hostetter presented a formal citation to honor the Pennsylvania State Grange's 150th anniversary.

Amidst the celebratory atmosphere, Rep. Eddie Day Pashinski, chairman of the House Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee, acknowledged the Grange's pivotal role as the voice of rural Pennsylvania. He commended the organization's contributions in areas such as rural electric, broadband connectivity, and overall improvements in the lives of rural communities.

Recognizing the Grange's enduring commitment to community service, education, legislation, and fellowship, Rep. Dan Moul, ranking Republican on the House Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee, praised the organization for its rich history and dedication to enhancing the American way of life.

Rep. Donna Oberlander highlighted the Grange's impact on agriculture education and applauded the National Grange for its early recognition of women's equality and voting rights.

The Pennsylvania State Grange History Committee, led by Doug Bonsall, shared their efforts in compiling a comprehensive account of the organization's storied past in the commonwealth.

The anniversary festivities will continue throughout the year, culminating in the 151st Pennsylvania State Grange session in October, hosted in Morgantown, Berks County. This yearlong celebration honors the Pennsylvania State Grange's enduring legacy and its ongoing commitment to the prosperity of agriculture and rural communities.
