Agriculture leaders and lawmakers met at Ag Progress Days in Centre County to discuss the future of agriculture in Pennsylvania.
Penn State President, Neeli Bendapudi said that agriculture is not just a profession, but a way of life. She said that agriculture sustains the body and nourishes the soul.
Governor Josh Shapiro highlighted the $132 billion dollars contributed by Pennsylvania farms to the economy. He said that the state is investing in agriculture through the state budget agreement, which includes $1 million for a new Organic Center of Excellence, $2 million for the Fresh Food Financing Initiative, and $31 million for poultry farmers impacted by the avian flu crisis.
Senator John Fetterman said that agriculture is king in Pennsylvania. He said that he is fighting for the best farm bill for Pennsylvania.
Shapiro said that he is looking to invest in the future of Ag, today, and that agriculture will serve as a key priority during his time as governor. He said that agriculture must be in the same sentence as life sciences and manufacturing when talking about growing the economy and creating more prosperity.
