Pennsylvania Grants Boost Small Meat Processor's Growth

Pennsylvania Grants Boost Small Meat Processor's Growth

By Blake Jackson

Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding announced the allocation of $592,282 in Very Small Meat and Poultry Processor Reimbursement Grants to seven small businesses across the state. These grants assist businesses with the costs associated with startup, expansion, and obtaining USDA inspections.

“This grant helps small meat and poultry processors meet growing demand from customers who want to buy local and keep their purchasing power at home, where it feeds their local economy,” said Secretary Redding.

“By investing in hometown food processing businesses, the Shapiro Administration is not only increasing opportunities for farmers and food processors to stay competitive, we are shortening supply chains, reducing transportation costs, and ensuring a more reliable, sustainable food supply in Pennsylvania.”

Since 2019, Pennsylvania has invested over $3.2 million through this grant program, supporting the growth of 54 small businesses.

This initiative aligns with Governor Josh Shapiro's commitment to revitalizing the agricultural sector, with $13.8 million invested annually in initiatives like workforce development, processing infrastructure, and marketing opportunities.

The Shapiro Administration recognizes the critical role of agriculture in Pennsylvania's economic development. Key initiatives include:

The first statewide economic development strategy in nearly two decades, prioritizing agriculture.

The $10 million Agriculture Innovation Program, fostering cutting-edge solutions and technologies.

The establishment of the Organic Center for Excellence to support organic farmers and businesses, along with the launch of the "PA Preferred Organic" brand.

Grant recipients, locations, and amounts are as follows:

  • Bradford County: Le Raysville Meat and Cheese ($78,878)
  • Centre County: Mark's Custom Meats ($50,854), Penns Valley Meat Market ($84,225)
  • Dauphin County: Moin Halal Meat ($100,000)
