The Pennsylvania Agriculture Secretary has announced significant grants totaling $392,265 to advance the growth and innovation of the state's hemp industry. Three agriculture nonprofits will receive funding to cultivate fiber and food hemp markets, increase sales, and raise awareness about the benefits of hemp in Pennsylvania. These grants aim to create new opportunities for businesses, generate farm income, and promote environmentally sustainable products derived from hemp.
The recipients of the grants and their respective projects are as follows:
Pennsylvania Hemp Industry Council - $56,000: The council will spearhead a campaign to educate the public about the advantages of hemp and establish new markets for hemp-based products. By fostering collaboration among farmers, businesses, investors, government agencies, and communities, the council aims to revitalize the hemp industry in Pennsylvania.
U.S. Ecological Advanced Research & Conservation Hub Hemp Certificate Program for Disadvantaged Communities (USEARCH) - $20,500: USEARCH, a nonprofit organization based in Lackawanna County, will develop an educational program focused on engaging disadvantaged communities, including youth, veterans, and women, in the hemp industry. The initiative seeks to provide these communities with opportunities to participate in the hemp sector.
Vytal Plant Science Research - $315,765: This funding will support the introduction of a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) curriculum on industrial hemp production, management, and cultivation in high schools and universities. Vytal aims to promote industrial hemp and its diverse applications, such as food, fiber, fuel, and personal care products.
The grants reimburse up to 50% of the project costs and were awarded through a competitive process. Preference was given to initiatives that leverage additional funding and foster public-private partnerships.
Pennsylvania's investment in the hemp industry extends beyond these grants, including the creation of state-level Specialty Crop Block grants through the historic PA Farm Bill. The state has also funded crucial research and development in higher education institutions and facilitated collaboration through the PA Hemp Steering Committee.
With these grants, Pennsylvania reaffirms its commitment to cultivating a vibrant hemp industry. The state has now surpassed $1.5 million in grant investments, with over $500,000 awarded during the Shapiro Administration.
