Pennsylvania farmers benefited from a productive week with 6 days suitable for fieldwork, as reported by the National Agricultural Statistics Service. This favorable weather window allowed for significant progress in spring planting activities.
Corn planting jumped to 23% completion, exceeding last year's progress by 7% and nearing the historical average. Barley development is also ahead of schedule, with 54% of the crop reaching the heading stage, compared to 22% last week.
Soil moisture remains in excellent condition. Topsoil is overwhelmingly adequate (89%) with some surplus (10%). Subsoil moisture is similarly favorable, with 77% listed as adequate and 19% surplus.
Apple trees are progressing well, with 95% reaching the green tip stage. Winter wheat head emergence has just begun at 5%, but data for this stage wasn't available last year or as a historical average for comparison.
