Pennsylvania farmer improves soil health, succession

Pennsylvania farmer improves soil health, succession

By Blake Jackson

Steven Chapin, the new owner of Chapin Family Farms in Columbia County, Pennsylvania, is focused on improving soil health and business succession.

The farm, which produces corn, soybeans, wheat, green beans, and rye, has been owned by the Chapin family since 1953. Chapin took over ownership in March 2023, after working with his father and uncle to plan the generational hand-off for three years.

One of Chapin's top priorities is improving soil health. He has implemented a variety of practices, including:

  • Diverse cover cropping
  • Select tillage
  • Soil testing
  • Manure usage
  • Planting green
  • Variable application rates

Chapin is pleased with the results of these practices, noting that his crops are now more resilient to extreme weather events. He is also seeing more consistent yields.

Chapin is also committed to business succession. He has been working to develop a plan for the future of the farm, which will include his children.

Chapin's story is an example of how Pennsylvania farmers are working to improve soil health and ensure the future of their businesses.
