In Pennsylvania, the week ending August 25, 2024, saw 7.0 days suitable for fieldwork, as reported by the National Agricultural Statistics Service.
Topsoil moisture levels were varied, with 7% classified as very short, 28% short, 59% adequate, and 6% surplus. Subsoil moisture levels showed 5% as very short, 33% short, 62% adequate, and no surplus.
Crop progress updates indicate a busy period for Pennsylvania farmers. Apple harvesting has progressed to 15% complete, up from 10% the previous week, but still behind last year’s 11% and the five-year average of 24%.
Corn is advancing with 97% of the crop in the silking stage, up from 84% last week. Corn in the dough stage stands at 55%, compared to 41% previously, while 21% of the corn has reached the dented stage, a significant increase from 9% last week. The average height of corn is reported at 82 inches.
Fall tillage is slightly behind schedule, with 5% completed compared to 6% historically. For hay crops, alfalfa's third cutting is at 56%, and the fourth cutting is underway at 25%.
Other hay cuts show 84% for the second cutting and 41% for the third. Oats harvesting is progressing well at 77%, while peach harvesting is notably at 71%. Soybeans are blooming at 95%, with 72% setting pods.
