Pennsylvania Ag literacy week - March 2025

Pennsylvania Ag literacy week - March 2025

By Blake Jackson

Calling all farmers and agriculture enthusiasts! Registration is open for the Pennsylvania Friends of Agriculture Foundation's ninth annual Ag Literacy Week, happening March 17-21, 2025.

This initiative connects volunteers from the agricultural community with local classrooms. Volunteers visit schools and student groups to read a children's book about agriculture and share their own experiences. This year, over 2,000 books will be distributed across Pennsylvania classrooms.

“Giving the next generation the opportunity to meet a farmer and learn about agriculture through our Ag Literacy Week program is extremely important,” said Chris Hoffman, Pennsylvania Farm Bureau President and Foundation chairman. “Allowing children to learn where their food comes from and giving them the chance to learn more about agriculture directly from a farmer is invaluable for the future of agriculture in Pennsylvania.”

This program fosters a valuable connection between future generations and the agricultural industry. After reading the book, volunteers donate it along with educational activities to the classroom for continued learning.

The 2025 Ag Literacy Week book, "The Soil in Jackie's Garden," is a captivating story that encourages children to explore the wonders of gardening.

Young readers will learn about planting, nurturing, and harvesting their own food, while also discovering the importance of composting and environmental stewardship.

The book is filled with engaging facts about soil, plants, pollinators, and decomposers.

Registration for volunteers is open now at www.pfbfriends.com/ag-literacy-week/. Don't miss out register by December 13th to be a part of this meaningful program.
