Pennsylvania's Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has updated its environmental justice policy, but it will not have any additional impact on animal agriculture.
The policy is designed to protect vulnerable communities from disproportionate exposure to pollution. It does this by identifying "environmental justice areas" and requiring enhanced public participation for certain permits in those areas.
Animal feeding operations (AFOs) have been subject to this enhanced public participation process since 2004. The updated policy does not change that.
Some farm groups have expressed concern that the new policy could lead to additional requirements for AFOs. However, DEP has stated that the policy is not intended to target any industry.
The updated policy does include some changes that could affect AFOs in the future. For example, it expands the definition of environmental justice areas to include some intensive farming areas. However, DEP has said that it will work with farmers to ensure that the policy is implemented fairly.
Overall, the updated environmental justice policy is a positive step for Pennsylvania. It will help to protect vulnerable communities from pollution and ensure that all residents have a voice in environmental decision-making.
