Pennsylvania is doubling down on its commitment to veterans in agriculture, announcing a significant increase in funding for the Veterans in Agriculture Grant program. During Military Appreciation Day at the 108th Pennsylvania Farm Show, Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding, alongside Adjutant General Mark Schindler, revealed a 50% boost in grant funding, bringing the total to $300,000.
This vital program empowers military veterans pursuing careers in agriculture. The increased funding will be distributed across two organizations:
PA Veteran Farming Network: Awarded $200,000, this statewide organization will utilize the funds to provide "mini-grants" supporting veterans in establishing or expanding their farming operations, promoting profitability and sustainability.
Community Partnership, Inc. (Butler County): This local organization receives $100,000 to offer similar mini-grants within Butler County, empowering local veterans to thrive in the agricultural sector.
Secretary Redding emphasized the deep gratitude the Shapiro Administration holds for all who serve, stating, "Two percent of Americans feed us, and two percent of Americans protect us. We are proud to support these heroes by connecting them with opportunities to grow and succeed in agriculture."
Adjutant General Schindler echoed this sentiment, expressing appreciation for the ongoing support and recognizing the immense value veterans bring to the agricultural industry and society.
The Veterans in Agriculture Grant program aligns with the Agricultural Business Development Center, established through the PA Farm Bill. This center assists Pennsylvania farms and agricultural businesses in achieving sustainable growth and profitability. The Shapiro Administration's commitment to veteran farmers extends beyond grants, as they actively support the Homegrown by Heroes program in collaboration with the Farmer Veteran Coalition and PA Preferred. This initiative assists veteran-owned farms in selling their locally grown products, enabling consumers to directly support veteran entrepreneurs.
With this increased funding and ongoing support programs, Pennsylvania is dedicated to fostering a thriving environment for veterans in agriculture. This commitment recognizes the critical role veterans play in feeding the nation and strengthens the state's agricultural landscape through their dedication and resilience.
