PA Boosts Urban Agriculture to Tackle Food Inequality

Pennsylvania is making significant strides in expanding urban agriculture to improve fresh food access and address historical inequities.

The GIANT Company, as part of its 100th-anniversary celebrations, has pledged $200,000 to support the 2023-24 PA Farm Bill Urban Agriculture Infrastructure Grants. This contribution brings the total funding for the program to $700,000.

The initiative aims to combat food deserts in urban areas, fostering community development and providing opportunities for growth.

The funding will enable the establishment of gardens in vacant lots and repurposed warehouses, bringing fresh produce closer to communities long deprived of nutritious options.

Over the years, Pennsylvania has invested over $2 million in urban agriculture, leveraging an additional $2 million in local matching dollars. A total of 113 projects in 19 counties have expanded fresh food access in areas typically served by a single convenience store.

The GIANT Company's support will help create resilient and food-secure communities for generations to come.

The company has been a longstanding partner of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, working with local partners like York Fresh Food Farms.

The grants provided in previous years have aided in building production capacity and funding essential equipment and cold storage.

Applicants are invited to apply for the 2023-24 round of Urban Agriculture Infrastructure Grants. Projects that enhance fresh food access and encourage community collaboration are eligible for funding.

Individuals, businesses, and organizations in urban communities can apply for either individual or collaborative grants. A 15% funding match is required for grant recipients. Applications open on July 17 and close on September 1.

The investment in urban agriculture demonstrates Pennsylvania's commitment to bridging the gap between its thriving agriculture industry and the accessibility of healthy, affordable food for all residents.
