Bayer Crop Science has developed a new corn seed trait that protects against corn rootworm. The trait is called VT4PRO and is available in the DeKalb brand of corn seed.
VT4PRO is a RNAi-based technology that produces a protein that deters pests from harming the roots of the corn plant. RNAi stands for RNA interference, which is a natural process that cells use to silence genes.
The VT4PRO trait is designed to target the corn rootworm, a major pest of corn crops. The rootworm larvae feed on the roots of corn plants, which can stunt the growth of the plant and reduce yields.
VT4PRO is effective against both light and moderate levels of rootworm pressure. It can also be used in conjunction with insecticides to provide additional protection against rootworm damage.
The VT4PRO trait is not harmful to beneficial insects, such as pollinators. It is also not expected to have any negative environmental impacts.
VT4PRO is available for the 2024 growing season.
Seed options include relative maturities of 95, 98, 102, and 114 days.
The development of VT4PRO is a breakthrough in the fight against corn rootworm. The trait offers farmers a new, effective way to protect their corn crops from this destructive pest.
