In a significant boost to local agriculture and small businesses, Agriculture Secretary Redding recently visited MudPond Meats in Dalton, announcing a substantial $676,000 allocation from the Pennsylvania Farm Bill. This funding aims to empower small-scale meat and poultry processors across 11 counties, including MudPond Meats, which received a $77,547 grant.
The initiative targets 12 small businesses, focusing on expanding their capabilities and ensuring food and worker safety. The funding will also facilitate necessary equipment purchases, enhancing these businesses' capacity to meet the growing consumer demand for locally sourced products.
Secretary Redding emphasized the importance of supporting local businesses, noting the positive impact on community economies and the resilience it brings to food supply chains. This approach not only keeps financial resources within local communities but also significantly reduces transportation costs and energy usage. In light of disruptions experienced during the pandemic, such measures are critical in ensuring a reliable and efficient supply chain.
MudPond Meats, a custom butcher shop, plans to use the grant to expand its operations. This expansion is not just a business growth strategy but a response to the increasing consumer preference for local products. By shortening the supply chain, MudPond Meats aims to lower operational costs and increase its profitability, all while contributing to a more stable and sustainable local economy.
