Manheim HS greenhouse sale gets revamp

Manheim HS greenhouse sale gets revamp

By Blake Jackson

Manheim Central High School's greenhouse is abuzz with activity in preparation for its annual plant sale on May 3-4 and 10-11. This year's event boasts exciting new features, including a state-of-the-art greenhouse completed in 2023.

The expanded space allows for a wider variety of plants, with the addition of nine beneficial "companion flowers" alongside the usual heirloom vegetables and herbs. These flowers attract pollinators and repel pests, making them a valuable addition to any garden.

Another unique aspect of this year's sale is the collaboration between greenhouse management students and life skills support class students. Working together in groups, these students gain valuable experience in plant care and build social connections.

The curriculum, led by Dr. Seth Kensinger and Gail Troutman, covers both plant science and hands-on activities like planting seeds and transplanting seedlings. The students actively participate in greenhouse upkeep, learning about germination, watering, and proper plant handling.

Shoppers at the sale can expect a diverse selection: 67 tomato varieties, 31 peppers, 13 herbs, 11 other vegetables, and the new lineup of nine flowers. All plants are nurtured by the school's greenhouse management classes.

This tradition dates back to around 2000, when retired teacher Deb Seibert established a greenhouse program. The sale initially took place at the Landis Valley Herb and Garden Faire. However, due to COVID-19 closures, the venue shifted to the school's premises in 2020 and has remained there ever since, proving a success. Proceeds are reinvested into the greenhouse program.

The inclusion of life skills students emerged from discussions between Kensinger and Troutman. Initially apprehensive, both groups have thrived in this inclusive environment. Life skills students feel more integrated into the school community, while greenhouse students develop valuable social skills.

The upcoming sale promises a knowledgeable team ready to answer customer questions about planting, spacing, and harvesting their new additions. Students like Gabby, a social media coordinator and avid gardener, are excited to share their knowledge. Likewise, life skills student Kayla enjoys the camaraderie and learning experience.

The positive impact extends beyond the sales. Students from both classes now socialize during lunch, demonstrating the lasting bonds formed. Both Kensinger and Troutman believe this program has fostered growth – both for the plants and the students involved.

The Manheim Central Ag Department Heirloom Plant Sale offers a unique opportunity to support the school program and acquire beautiful, healthy plants. Don't miss it!
