Lancaster Mennonite FFA Visits Pennsylvania Farm Show

By Blake Jackson

On January 12, 21 students from Lancaster Mennonite School’s Hans Herr FFA chapter visited Harrisburg to attend the Pennsylvania Farm Show, experiencing a day full of learning, career exploration, and celebration of agriculture across the state.

The day began with an FFA-exclusive Agricultural Career Fair, where students connected with over 40 employers representing careers in agriculture, science, technology, and related fields. They explored internships, training programs, and long-term career pathways, gaining valuable insight into how agriculture intersects with innovation, stewardship, and service.

After the career fair, students toured the Farm Show complex, exploring hundreds of commercial exhibits, educational displays, and thousands of animals, including cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, rabbits, and poultry. Exhibits from Penn State, the PA Department of Agriculture, and the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources highlighted sustainability, conservation, and responsible farming practices.

In the afternoon, students attended the 97th Pennsylvania FFA Mid-Winter Convention at the New Holland Arena, joining nearly 12,000 FFA members and alumni. During the ceremony, Lancaster Mennonite celebrated Liam Dangler, Charlotte Clement, and Alina Karr, each receiving an official FFA jacket as part of a record-breaking statewide presentation.

The event featured remarks from Russell Redding, PA Secretary of Agriculture, and Dr. Carrie Rowe, PA Secretary of Education, emphasizing the importance of agricultural education. Students were inspired by Sherisea Nailor, PA FFA Alumni President, who reminded them that growth comes not only from success, but from the experiences gained along the way.

The day ended with time to enjoy Farm Show traditions, including the PA Dairymen’s Association milkshake stand. Vice President Lydia Harrison shared, “watching a cow give birth, cattle judging, the mullet contest, the butter sculpture, and of course, the food a chocolate milkshake and cheese cubes.”

Led by President Allie Doutrich and Vice President Lydia Harrison, the Hans Herr FFA chapter continues to guide students in connecting faith, service, and agriculture.
