Herds and Her Workshop Empowers Dairy Women

Herds and Her Workshop Empowers Dairy Women

By Blake Jackson

Penn State Extension is hosting “Herds and Her: Empowering Women in Dairy,” a full-day, in-person workshop dedicated to supporting women in the dairy industry. The event will take place on May 20, 2025, from 8:45 AM to 5:00 PM at Fantasyland Holsteins, located at 27 Valley Farm Lane, Robesonia, Pennsylvania.

This hands-on, boot camp-style workshop offers practical training to help women improve their dairy farm operations. Participants will learn important skills through interactive sessions and expert-led instruction. Topics will include on-farm culturing to improve milk quality, calculating breakeven costs for better farm budgeting, and conducting serum total protein analysis to measure passive immunity transfer in calves.

In addition to classroom-style learning, attendees will also participate in engaging, hands-on activities. These include farm safety practices, strategies to identify and prevent lameness in cattle, and overall techniques to promote better herd health.

The event aims to provide a supportive and collaborative environment where women can build their confidence, connect with peers, and strengthen their expertise in dairy farming. The program is specifically designed to address the unique challenges and opportunities women face in the agricultural sector.

Registration is required to attend the workshop, with the deadline set for May 16, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. Early registration is encouraged due to limited spots.

Funding for this workshop is made possible by a grant from the Northeast Extension Risk Management Education program.

Women interested in dairy farming and looking to enhance their operational knowledge are encouraged to take part in this empowering and educational event.
