Grazing for Profit Workshop Set for June 7 in Union City

By Blake Jackson

Pennsylvania livestock producers and pasture managers are invited to a "Grazing for Profit" workshop on Saturday, June 7, 2025, from 9 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at LC Ranch in Union City. Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m.

This hands-on event offers practical strategies for managing small ruminants and pastures, alongside networking opportunities. Hosted by Leon Gehman of LC Ranch, a working Katahdin sheep farm, the workshop will showcase real-world applications.

Sessions will cover pasture fertility, small ruminant management inputs, identifying and using unconventional pasture plants, and rotational grazing planning.

A key focus will be internal parasite management using FAMACHA scoring and fecal egg counts. Information on FAMACHA certification will be provided, and attendees can practice scoring, a certification requirement.

Participants will also tour LC Ranch, observing equipment, fencing strategies, and the benefits of the National Sheep Improvement Program (NSIP).

Speakers include Tom Perkins of the Grazing Sheep Podcast, Penn State Extension educators Erin Cuprinka, Mattie Horchler, and Austin Brown, and grazing specialist Gabe Francisco. Leon Gehman will lead the farm tour.

Registration is $30 for adults, $15 for children (8-18), and $80 for groups of four or more until May 30th. After May 30th, prices increase to $40 for adults and $20 for children; those under 8 are free. Walk-ins are welcome with prior notification.

To register, contact Austin Brown at 814-865-1718 or aqb5615@psu.edu. Checks payable to PSWGA can be mailed to Gregory Hubbard at 1763 Bethel Hollow Rd., New Paris, PA 15554.

The Pennsylvania Grazing Lands Coalition, Pennsylvania Sheep and Woolgrowers Association, and Penn State Extension support this event.
