Fresh food for all - CSA get creative

Fresh food for all - CSA get creative

By Blake Jackson

Fresh, locally grown food can be expensive, making it a challenge for both consumers and small farms. But Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs are finding innovative ways to bridge the gap, offering flexible payment options and financial support to increase accessibility.

Some CSAs, like Hunter Hill in Pennsylvania, used sliding scale pricing, allowing members to pay market rate, less, or more depending on their budget. This worked well for them but switching to set-rate pricing and flexible installments with a smaller number of shares better fit their new farm goals.

Owl's Nest Farm in Maryland offers both sliding scale and a "share cost relief fund," where members can contribute to help others afford their shares. This provides options for those who want to support the farm and access fresh produce.

While some farms like Owl's Nest benefit from affluent locations and additional revenue streams like half-shares, others, like Toboggan Hill Farm in New York, are testing the waters with sliding scale pricing and labor exchanges. This approach lets people contribute their time in exchange for food, ensuring everyone can participate.

No single solution fits every farm or community, but these creative approaches highlight the commitment of CSAs to providing fresh food while making it accessible to all. By offering flexible options and financial support, CSAs are contributing to a more equitable and sustainable food system.
