Pesticide applicators generally understand why and when respirators are required, but many are less familiar with the specific testing and compliance steps needed to use them safely. Under the Environmental Protection Agency’s Worker Protection Standard, OSHA’s respirator regulations apply to anyone who handles, assists with, or applies pesticides.
When a product label mandates the use of a respirator, applicators must complete several important requirements to protect themselves from inhalation hazards.
First, a medical evaluation must be conducted by a licensed healthcare provider. Many individuals can complete this review online, but depending on health conditions, an in-person assessment may be necessary. Changes in health or workplace conditions may also require additional evaluations.
Second, each applicator must receive an annual fit test for every type of respirator they use. A new fit test is required if a different respirator model or size is chosen or if the user experiences significant facial changes.
Third, applicators must complete yearly training on proper respirator use and care. More frequent training may be required if new hazards arise or a different respirator is used. Applicators must also maintain records documenting medical evaluations, fit tests, and training for at least two years.
Penn State Extension’s Respirator Fit Test Program offers applicators an opportunity to complete medical evaluations, fit testing, and a 30-minute training session along with earning one Core pesticide credit at events held across Pennsylvania. Fit tests are free, though some events require registration. Participants must be clean-shaven and bring their own respirators with cartridges.
Several program dates are scheduled throughout 2026, including events at the Mid-Atlantic Fruit and Vegetable Convention, Penn State Crops Conference, Penn State Tree Fruit Meetings, and the PA Wine and Grape Conference.
