Rising Costs Push Farmer Sentiment Lower

Rising Costs Push Farmer Sentiment Lower

By Jamie Martin

Farmer outlook weakened in June as concerns about production costs continued to affect confidence across the agricultural sector. The latest Ag Economy Barometer showed a decline from May, reflecting reduced optimism about both current business conditions and future prospects according to the report authors Michael Langemeier and Joana Colussi from the Purdue Center for Commercial Agriculture.

The survey highlighted rising input costs as the largest issue facing farmers. More than four out of ten respondents said these expenses are limiting their ability to improve financial performance this year. Fertilizer, fuel, feed, labor, and other operational costs remain significant challenges for many farms.

Low commodity prices ranked as another important concern, although they trailed far behind input costs. Respondents also identified weather-related risks, policy uncertainty, labor availability, equipment concerns, and financial pressures as factors affecting farm performance.

Results from 400 producers nationwide indicated that confidence in current conditions has dropped to its lowest level since late 2024. Expectations for the years ahead also softened as farmers evaluated market conditions and profitability outlooks.

A large difference was seen between the crop and livestock sectors. Livestock producers were generally more optimistic about future opportunities, while crop producers expressed greater concerns about economic conditions over the next five years.

The survey also measured views on the nation's direction. Just over half of producers said the country is moving in the right direction, a figure that remained close to the level reported in the previous month.

Even with ongoing worries about farm income and costs, respondents maintain confidence in farmland values. Producers continued to expect land values to remain strong in both the near and long term.
