A recent benchmark survey conducted by Penn State Extension in the winter of 2025 has shed light on the performance and economic impact of Pennsylvania's retail farm markets.
With nearly 700 such markets across the Commonwealth, ranging from simple roadside stands to large retail spaces, these businesses form a crucial link in the local food supply chain and often feature products from other regional farms and enterprises.
The survey, which ran from December 2024 to the end of March 2025 and garnered responses from 167 markets, conservatively estimates that retail farm markets generate over $200 million in annual economic activity within Pennsylvania. Scaling up the survey data, the estimated total economic impact is approximately $203,125,000.
The average market surveyed features an inside sales area of about 1790.81 square feet and a significant outside sales space averaging 9214.10 square feet, highlighting the importance of outdoor displays in attracting customers. In terms of employment, these markets average 4 full-time and 10 part-time employees.
The survey also calculated sales per square foot at approximately $174.45. When compared to industry standards, this figure is lower than that of small grocery retail (around $500) and general retail (approximately $325).
This difference may reflect factors unique to farm markets, such as seasonal fluctuations, the types of products offered, and the specific customer base.
However, farm markets also serve as vital community hubs, providing fresh, local produce and fostering community engagement, benefits not always captured by traditional retail metrics.
Encouragingly, on average, the markets surveyed reported a 10% increase in gross sales and a 14% increase in customer numbers compared to the previous year, indicating positive growth trends.
While the overall economic impact of farm markets may be smaller than major sectors, their role in supporting local economies, providing access to fresh produce, and building community connections is significant for sustainable agriculture and local business development.
