According to the latest report from the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) in Pennsylvania, the week ending November 17, 2024, saw 6.5 days suitable for fieldwork.
However, moisture levels remained a concern, with topsoil supplies reported as 18% very short, 38% short, 42% adequate, and 2% surplus.
Subsoil moisture conditions were similarly concerning, with 20% of the subsoil rated as very short, 33% short, and 47% adequate, but no surplus was reported.
Crop progress across the state showed notable activity despite the moisture challenges. Barley emergence reached 80%, up from 60% the previous week and surpassing last year's 71%.
Corn harvest for grain has progressed to 77%, up from 67% last week, though slightly behind the 5-year average of 76%. Soybean harvest is nearly complete, with 85% of the crop harvested, an increase from 73% the previous week, and in line with the 5-year average of 84%.
Fall tillage operations are progressing well, with 85% of the planned work completed, ahead of last year's 78% and in line with the 5-year average of 76%.
Winter wheat planting is nearly finished, with 96% of fields planted, and 70% of the crop has already emerged, showing steady growth despite less-than-ideal moisture levels.
