Pennsylvania Alfalfa, Barley, Wheat Harvests Lag Averages



According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service in Pennsylvania, there were 6.5 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending Sunday.

Topsoil moisture supplies were 17 percent very short, 33 percent short, and 50 percent adequate. Subsoil moisture supplies were 15 percent very short, 30 percent short, 55 percent adequate.

Barley harvested for grain reached 58 percent this past week compared to 94 percent last year.

Second cutting of alfalfa hay was 54 percent complete, up only 2 percentage points from last week, and far behind last year's 71 percent and the fie-year average of 73 percent complete. Meanwhile, second cutting of other hay was 35 percent complete, up from 25 percent last week, and ahead of last year's 30 percent progress. The five-year average is 41 percent complete by this time.

Pennsylvania winter wheat harvested for grain was 27 percent complete, far behind last year's 71 percent and the five-year average of 67 percent complete.
