Penn State Extension is offering a new online course, "Introduction to Food Packaging: Materials, Manufacturing and Innovation." This course is designed to provide a comprehensive overview of food packaging, from materials and manufacturing processes to sustainability and consumer trends.
The course is ideal for a variety of individuals, including food industry professionals, packaging engineers, and anyone with a general interest in the topic.
Participants will learn about the different types of food packaging materials, such as paper, metal, plastic, glass, and flexible packaging. They will also explore the advantages and disadvantages of each type, as well as the factors that influence packaging selection, including cost, marketing, and consumer preferences.
The course will delve into the importance of packaging in preventing damage and extending the shelf life of food products. It will also address the growing concern of packaging waste and discuss sustainable packaging solutions.
Participants will learn about innovative packaging materials and emerging trends in the food packaging industry.
To complete the course, participants will need to complete nine sections, including readings, videos, and quizzes. Upon successful completion, participants will receive a certificate of completion and two continuing education units from Penn State's Food Science Certificate Program.
