Organic Producers Voice Their Needs

Organic Producers Voice Their Needs

By Jamie Martin

The Organic Farming Research Foundation (OFRF) has launched the 2025-2026 National Organic Farmer Survey, a key initiative designed to understand the needs and challenges of organic and transitioning farmers. Open until January 31, 2026, the survey will help guide future research priorities, education programs, and policy decisions that influence the growth of organic agriculture across the United States.

Since 1990, OFRF has focused on supporting organic producers by ensuring that research and policy reflect the realities farmers face. Insights from earlier surveys, such as the 2022 National Organic Research Agenda, have shaped university research, Extension programs, and policy efforts that directly benefit organic farming communities.

“Organic farmers are experts in their fields, and their perspectives must guide decisions about agricultural research, education, and policy,” said Brise Tencer, executive director of OFRF. “This survey ensures that investments in the organic sector reflect the real needs of producers on the ground.”

Farmers completing the survey will receive a discount code to Johnny’s Selected Seeds and may enter to win several prizes, including durable boots from The Original Muck Boot Company, FELCO pruners, and a professional organic farming consultation.

Researchers strongly support the importance of farmer input. Dr. Alex Woodley of North Carolina State University explained that survey results reveal real knowledge gaps and help strengthen grant proposals by highlighting farmer needs.

Farmers can access the survey by emailing OFRF’s communications team. It is available in both English and Spanish, and paper copies can be requested. The 2022 NORA report, which summarizes results from the previous survey, remains available online for anyone interested in past findings.
