NRCS Invests $9.5M in Chesapeake Bay Farm Conservation

NRCS Invests $9.5M in Chesapeake Bay Farm Conservation

By Blake Jackson

The Pennsylvania Natural Resources Conservation Service (PA NRCS) has awarded $9.5 million to the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay to expand conservation efforts supporting farmers in priority watersheds throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

Announced by NRCS State Conservationist Denise Coleman, the funding will provide technical assistance and financial resources to help farmers implement conservation practices that improve water quality, strengthen soil health, and create new wildlife habitats.

The initiative aims to make conservation more affordable and accessible while encouraging greater farmer participation.

Titled “Accelerating Regenerative Agriculture Through Public-Private Partnership,” the project is part of a nationwide investment exceeding $325 million for 42 projects under the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP).

The program brings together federal funding and private sector partnerships to address natural resource challenges on agricultural lands.

“The Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP) pairs private investment with federal funds to deliver better results,” said U.S. Secretary Brooke Rollins in her recent announcement of the nationwide projects. “Recently, we’ve taken steps to improve RCPP to reduce red tape and increase flexibility to better empower local partners to conserve natural resources while helping American farmers prosper."

Through this partnership, the Pennsylvania project will help producers adopt regenerative agricultural practices while protecting natural resources across the Chesapeake Bay region.

The investment is also intended to accelerate on-the-ground conservation by improving access to financial and technical support.

Over the past year, NRCS has streamlined RCPP partnership agreements and introduced greater flexibility to improve program delivery for conservation partners, farmers, and ranchers.

According to USDA, 75% of this year's $325 million RCPP investment will go directly to farmers or cover the costs of implementing conservation practices. These efforts aim to strengthen agricultural operations while delivering environmental benefits throughout the watershed.
