Research indicates that feeding a total mixed ration (TMR) can significantly improve dairy cow performance, ultimately increasing profitability for dairy producers.
A nutritionally balanced TMR allows cows to consume nutrients more closely aligned with their actual energy needs, promoting better overall health and productivity.
Despite these benefits, a recent survey conducted by the Center for Dairy Excellence and Penn State Extension found that roughly 21 percent of Pennsylvania dairy producers do not use TMR for their herds.
To better understand why some producers are not implementing TMR, the Center has developed a short follow-up survey aimed at gathering insights on feeding practices and potential barriers.
“At the Center for Dairy Excellence, we’re always looking for ways to not only support Pennsylvania dairy farm families, but to help them remain competitive and successful,” said Melissa Anderson, Programs and Operations Manager at the Center for Dairy Excellence.
“Our hope is to use the input dairy farmers share in this TMR survey to better understand how we can support the dairy farmers we work with when it comes to nutrition and feeding strategies.”
The survey asks questions such as the size of the herd, types of milking parlors, housing systems, involvement with nutritionists, and whether TMR is currently used. For those not using TMR, the survey seeks to identify the reasons and barriers preventing adoption.
Producers can complete the survey anonymously in less than five minutes. It is available online at www.surveymonkey.com/r/tmr-survey. For those who prefer, the survey can also be completed by phone or via printed copy by contacting Allen Hess at 717-346-0849.
This effort aims to help dairy producers optimize feeding strategies while supporting the long-term success of Pennsylvania’s dairy industry.
