Pennsylvania's maple tapping season officially began with Agriculture Secretary Redding's visit to Dewy Meadows Farm in Bradford County. This event not only marks the season's start but also highlights Governor Shapiro's initiatives to strengthen the state's forest products industry, including the thriving maple syrup sector.
Governor Shapiro's proposed budget for 2024-25 includes strategic investments to nurture Pennsylvania's $39 billion forest products industry and agriculture. This includes increased funding for the PA Hardwoods Development Council, Farm Bill grants, and research to address industry challenges.
Secretary Redding emphasized the importance of Pennsylvania's agricultural sector, particularly its position as the 5th largest producer of maple syrup in the US, valued at $5.4 million annually. He acknowledged the role of traditional farms like Dewy Meadows Maple, a century farm symbolizing the state's agricultural heritage and family resilience.
The proposed budget outlines a comprehensive strategy to solidify agriculture as a key economic pillar. This includes funding for agricultural innovation, pest detection, the Agriculture Conservation Assistance Program, and Agricultural Research to address issues like disease, pests, and climate change. Additionally, a $13 million allocation for the PA Farm Bill aims to support the forest products sector and enhance the state's $132 billion agricultural industry through various initiatives.
