Fuel Saving Tips for Rural Drivers Facing Higher Gas Costs

Fuel Saving Tips for Rural Drivers Facing Higher Gas Costs

By Blake Jackson

Rising fuel prices are once again putting pressure on household and farm budgets, especially for rural residents who often travel longer distances for work and daily activities.

According to Penn State Extension Senior Educator Tom Beresnyak, rural workers drive an average of 55 miles each day compared to 26 miles for urban commuters. Combined with generally lower monthly incomes, higher fuel expenses can create a significant financial burden for rural families.

Fortunately, several simple driving habits can help reduce fuel consumption and save money. One of the most effective ways to improve fuel economy is slowing down. The U.S. Department of Energy reports that driving more than 60 mph can sharply increase fuel costs, with every additional 5 mph acting like an extra 30 cents per gallon. Smooth driving also makes a difference.

Rapid acceleration and hard braking can lower fuel efficiency by as much as 33%, according to Purdue University. Using cruise control on highways and avoiding unnecessary idling can further reduce fuel use.

Vehicle maintenance also plays an important role in fuel savings. Properly inflated and aligned tires can improve fuel economy by at least 3%.

Removing unnecessary weight from vehicles can provide additional savings, while regular oil and filter changes using manufacturer-recommended products can improve efficiency by another 1% to 2%.

Planning trips more carefully can also help drivers spend less on gasoline. Combining errands into one trip reduces repeated cold starts and lowers total mileage driven. Carpooling to work, school events, or community activities is another practical way to cut costs.

Beresnyak encourages drivers to make small adjustments and monitor the results. Even minor improvements in driving habits and vehicle care can lead to noticeable monthly savings while reducing fuel consumption overall.
