Five professors from the University of Pennsylvania have been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a respected society founded in 1780. This 2025 honour recognizes nearly 250 new members for their excellence, innovation, and leadership.
Dennis E. Discher, Robert D. Bent Professor at Penn Engineering, is noted for his research on stem cells, tumors, and immune system interactions. He directs the Physical Sciences Oncology Center and is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and the National Academy of Engineering.
Michael Jones-Correa, President’s Distinguished Professor of Political Science, is celebrated for his work on immigrant political incorporation and Latino politics. He has led key projects like the Latino National Survey and recently became a Robert A. Dahl Fellow.
Cherie Kagan, Stephen J. Angello Professor, holds appointments in engineering, materials science, and chemistry. Her research focuses on nanostructured materials for advanced technologies. She directs the Engineering Research Center for the Internet of Things for Precision Agriculture and has received many prestigious awards.
Sophia Rosenfeld, Walter H. Annenberg Professor and chair of the history department, specializes in the history of democracy and Enlightenment thought. Her recent book, The Age of Choice, was named a New York Times Editors’ Choice, adding to her acclaimed body of work.
Susan R. Weiss, professor of microbiology, leads research on coronavirus biology and immune responses. She directs the Penn Center for Research on Coronaviruses and Other Emerging Pathogens and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2023.
These professors’ achievements showcase Penn’s ongoing impact across science, engineering, humanities, and public health.
