Fieldwork conditions improve - Pennsylvania crop report

According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service in Pennsylvania, the week ending October 13, 2024, provided favorable conditions for fieldwork, with an average of 6.0 days suitable.

Topsoil moisture levels were mostly adequate, with 1% rated very short, 11% short, 85% adequate, and 3% surplus. Subsoil moisture showed similar results, with no reports of very short supplies, while 15% were rated short and 85% adequate.

As of this week, several crops have shown notable progress. Apple harvesting has reached 80%, up from 75% last week, slightly ahead of the five-year average of 81%.

Corn maturity stands at 60%, with 20% of the crop harvested for grain, a significant increase from just 6% last week. Additionally, 79% of corn for silage has been harvested.

Soybeans are also progressing, with 78% of the leaves dropping, and 17% of the crop has been harvested, albeit below the five-year average of 25%.

Winter wheat planting is underway, with 23% of the crop planted and 9% emerged. The fall tillage is 40% complete, indicating farmers are actively preparing their fields for the upcoming season.
