Farm show fun fuels midstate economy

By Blake Jackson

The 108th Pennsylvania Farm Show isn't just about tractors and milkshakes. This annual extravaganza, starting January 7th, boasts a profound economic impact on the Midstate and beyond.

Beyond the "Connecting Our Communities" theme and family fun, the Farm Show generates a ripple effect, estimated to top $38 million according to Visit Hershey-Harrisburg. Hotels fill, restaurants buzz, and businesses thrive thanks to the influx of visitors.

Governor Shapiro and Secretary Redding recognize the show's significance as a stage for the state's $132.5 billion agricultural industry. Exhibitors from across Pennsylvania, like Cumberland and Perry counties, also see the value in connecting with consumers and showcasing their products.

Inside the Farm Show Complex, the Food Court hums with activity. Commodity booths offer diverse local fare, with profits supporting small businesses, farmers, research, and youth scholarships. Meanwhile, equipment giants unveil their latest innovations, and commercial exhibitors showcase their wares, from farm essentials to handcrafted pottery.

For organizations like the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau, the Farm Show is a bridge between consumers and the agricultural community. "We connect people with their roots," explains David Varner, spokesperson. They answer questions about food sources, legislation, and responsible land stewardship, educating the public about the diverse world of agriculture.

Gene and Ann Acri, owners of Pottery & Country 4 You, have witnessed the show's power firsthand. Their 36-year Farm Show journey boasts record-breaking sales in recent years, with their dip mixes and hand-crafted pottery a hit among visitors.

And it's not just about the Main Exhibition Hall. Area hotels and motels see a surge in bookings, welcoming guests who appreciate the early-to-bed, early-to-rise Farm Show schedule. Restaurants like Appalachian Brewing Co. enjoy a post-holiday boost, with hungry visitors seeking a change from the show's staple fare.

From hotels and restaurants to local businesses and farms, the Pennsylvania Farm Show's economic impact is undeniable. It's a testament to the power of agriculture, and a reminder that this annual event is much more than just fun and food. It's a celebration of community, a showcase of innovation, and a vital engine for the Midstate's economy.
