American Farm Bureau Federation President Zippy Duvall today expressed deep concern over Congress's inaction during the current session, particularly regarding the extension of the farm bill without necessary modernization.
Duvall highlighted the urgent needs of farmers, especially in light of recent natural disasters and a sharp projected decline in farm income over the next two years. "The frightening financial pinch farm families across the country are experiencing is real," Duvall stated, pointing to the dire financial situations that jeopardize farm operations.
The ongoing agricultural downturn has led to increased land auctions, decreased equipment purchases, and warnings from lenders about the potential default on operating loans.
The financial strain is evident as farm incomes plummet due to inflation, high supply costs, and falling commodity prices.
Duvall called for immediate legislative action to support farmers and rural communities. He stressed the importance of economic relief measures to help farmers manage risks and cope with the current financial hardships. According to Duvall, a staggering 78 percent of Americans believe that supporting farmers should be a legislative priority.
With the farm bill extension looming and no significant amendments in sight, Duvall’s plea underscores the critical window closing for Congressional action to safeguard the future of U.S. agriculture.
