Pennsylvania Growers Produce Record-High Corn and Soybeans

Pennsylvania corn growers produced a record high 167 million bushels, up 21% from 2020, according to King Whetstone, director of the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), Northeastern Regional Field Office. The average yield in Pennsylvania is estimated at a record high 169.0 bushels per acre, 31.0 bushels above the 2020 average yield of 138.0 bushels per acre. Area harvested for grain, at 990,000 acres, is down 1% from 2020.

Corn for silage production in 2021 is estimated at 6.30 million tons, down 32% from 2020. The average yield is estimated at 21.0 tons per acre, up 2.0 tons from last year's yield. Harvested area, at 300,000 acres, is down 38% from last year.

Soybean production in 2021 totaled a record high 31.5 million bushels, up 9% from last year. Soybean yield is estimated at a record high 53.0 bushels per acre, up 7.0 bushels from 2020. Harvested area in 2021, at 595,000, is down 6% from last year.

Pennsylvania tobacco production for 2021 is estimated at 14.0 million pounds, up 4% from last year. Growers harvested 5,350 acres, down 3% from a year ago. Yield per acre averaged a record high 2,621 pounds per acre, up 177 pounds per acre from 2020.

Also released Wednesday were the Winter Wheat Seedings and Grain Stocks reports. The Winter Wheat Seedings report is the first indicator of this year's winter wheat acreage. Planted area for harvest in 2022 is estimated at 275,000 acres, up 2% from 2021 and up 17% from 2020.

The estimates in the report were based primarily on surveys conducted the first two weeks of December.
