Juniata Co. Woman Wins Apple Pie Contest
Pennsylvania Ag Connection - 01/10/2018

In the search for Pennsylvania's best apple pie, five judges tasted 73 entries, ultimately selecting Lucinda Donough of Port Royal, Juniata County, as winner of the Blue-Ribbon Apple Pie Contest at the 2018 Pennsylvania Farm Show.

Lucinda and her husband Steve are veteran competitors in Pennsylvania Farm Show baking contests. Lucinda has won two blue ribbons and one white in the Angel Food Cake contests. Steve won last year's Angel Food contest.

To qualify to compete in the Blue-Ribbon Apple Pie Contest, exhibitors must win at one of the 109 county and community agricultural fairs statewide. Donough won the Juniata County Fair.

Second prize went to Robert Cuthie, representing the New Holland Farmer's Fair. Nine-year veteran of the apple pie contest and last year's second prize winner, Sharon Karlheim won third this year, representing Cambria County Fair.

Each year the pies are judged in two separate rounds. Entries are evaluated on five criteria: flavor (30 points), filling (25 points), crust (20 points), appearance (15 points) and creativity (10 points). After each judge has evaluated the appearance of the pies, each judge samples 14 to 15 pies in the first round.

The top five pies from each judging table then advance to the final round of judging. The top 25 pies are then sampled by all five judges, who then deliberate together to choose the best top five pies.

Monetary prizes were awarded to the top three individuals. First place was awarded $500, second $250, and third prize was $100. Ribbons were awarded to all top five award winners.

Judges included Donna Kramer, PA Showman's Association treasurer; Harry Reffner, PA State Association of County Fair (PSACF) treasurer; Mike Beekman, Delaware Valley University graduate in Food Science Technology and 4th generation farmer; Morgan Hetherington-Bond, a food quality assurance representative and strawberry grower; and Brian Peffley, a pastry arts teacher at Academy of Arts in Lebanon County.

Additional winners:

4th --Emily Weber, winner of the Manheim Community Farm Show

5th --Bonnie Billet, winner of the Mason Dixon Fair
