Pennsylvania Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding concluded an inspiring weeklong tour, highlighting 15 remarkable projects across the state that are revolutionizing the perception of agriculture. These initiatives, driven by dedicated Pennsylvanians, are fostering community strength and driving economic progress through urban agriculture.
Urban farming is transforming Pennsylvania's future by providing inspiration and life skills to young individuals, generating funds for food assistance through flower sales, employing cutting-edge technology to reduce food waste and promote healthier produce, and creating a sense of familiarity and community for new Americans in unfamiliar surroundings.
Governor Josh Shapiro joined the tour at Fresh Food Farms in York, where he announced The GIANT Company's commitment of $200,000 to support PA Farm Bill Urban Agriculture Infrastructure Grants. This partnership boosts the total funding to $700,000, aiming to increase fresh food access in urban food deserts, address historical inequities, and create thriving community opportunities.
These projects, funded by state investments and enhanced by private and corporate partnerships, empower formerly incarcerated women, children with disabilities, and public school agriculture students to cultivate food year-round, learn essential skills, and foster inclusivity.
Pennsylvania has already invested over $2 million in urban agriculture since 2019, leveraging an additional $2 million in local matching funds. Currently, 113 projects across 19 counties are expanding fresh food access in areas traditionally served by just a single convenience store.
Applications for the 2023-24 Urban Agriculture Infrastructure Grants are now open, welcoming individuals, businesses, and organizations to develop programs and resources that enhance a neighborhood's access to fresh, local food. The grants can be applied for either individual "microgrants" or collaborative partnership projects, promoting community-based solutions.
Pennsylvania's commitment to urban agriculture is evident in its efforts to break barriers, address inequities, and foster sustainable growth. By supporting these initiatives, the state is nurturing a resilient and thriving agricultural landscape that benefits all its residents.
