Pennsylvania Bets on Organic Agriculture

Pennsylvania Bets on Organic Agriculture

Pennsylvania is capitalizing on the surging demand for organic food across the country and positioning itself as an organic farming leader. Building upon the existing Pennsylvania Farm Bill, Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro has proposed a $1 million investment in organics for the 2023-24 fiscal year budget. The aim is to establish the Organic Center of Excellence, serving as a gateway for farmers and producers transitioning to organic farming. The center will streamline access to state services, facilitate public-private partnerships with industry groups like The Rodale Institute, and nurture the growth of organic agriculture.

The demand for organic produce is evident in Pennsylvania's significant growth in the organic farming sector over the last decade, with the number of organic farms nearly tripling. Pennsylvania ranks third in the nation in organic sales and fourth in organic farms. To support this thriving sector, Pennsylvania Certified Organic, based in Centre County, is certifying agricultural producers in 25 states, making it the fifth-largest organic certifier in the U.S.

The process of transitioning to organic farming can be challenging and time-consuming, but it offers numerous environmental and economic benefits. Organic agriculture helps mitigate climate change, reduces groundwater contamination, and fosters supply chain resiliency. The state's investments in research and development will provide crucial knowledge and safeguard the industry's independence from potential external influences.

Pennsylvania's strategic investments in organic agriculture are seen as a "win-win-win" situation, benefitting the economy, the environment, and job creation. As the organic sector continues to grow, the state aims to support farmers, producers, and processors to meet the increasing demand for organic products while promoting sustainability and local resilience.
