PA egg safety okay despite bird flu find

PA egg safety okay despite bird flu find

By Blake Jackson

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture urges all poultry owners, from backyard flocks to commercial producers, to be on high alert for avian influenza (HPAI) following a new case detected in a Northumberland County game bird flock.

This comes despite several months with no reported cases, highlighting the importance of ongoing vigilance. Samples are undergoing confirmatory testing, but the department has already taken action to quarantine the farm and establish a control area with stricter protocols for poultry movement.

While this case raises concerns, officials emphasize that poultry and eggs remain safe for consumption. Human health risk remains low, according to the CDC.

Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding emphasizes the state's preparedness and partnership with USDA and Penn State in responding to this incident. He reminds all poultry owners to prioritize biosecurity measures, including:

  • Frequent cleaning and disinfection of clothes, boots, equipment, and vehicles.
  • Controlling rodents and wild birds, potential disease carriers.
  • Keeping birds inside whenever possible to minimize contact with wild birds.
  • Eliminating standing water and potential entry points for wild birds in barns.

Detailed biosecurity information is available on the USDA's Defend the Flock program website.

Governor Shapiro's bipartisan budget increase allocated $31 million to support poultry farmers impacted by HPAI, covering testing costs and reimbursing flock losses. Additionally, a team of over 170 experts is assisting farms across the state with testing and security measures.

Redding urges everyone to recognize signs of disease in poultry and report any suspected cases or unusual deaths to the Department of Agriculture at 717-772-2852. A veterinarian is available 24/7 to assist.
