Penn State Extension has released an updated Pre-sidedress Soil Nitrate Test (PSNT) for corn farmers. This affordable soil test helps determine the optimal amount of sidedress nitrogen (N) fertilizer needed for your corn crop.
How PSNT Works:
- Sample Soil: During early corn growth, take soil samples and send them to a lab for nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) testing.
- Analyze Results: The NO3-N level indicates available nitrogen from manure and organic matter in the soil.
- Get Recommendations: A simple formula based on test results provides a recommendation for sidedress N fertilizer to achieve the Economic Optimum Nitrogen Rate (EONR) for your specific crop. The test can also indicate if no additional N is needed, potentially saving fertilizer costs.

- Updated Formula: The formula considers changes in agricultural practices since the 1990s, including cover crops, modern manure management, and improved soil health. These practices can increase a soil's ability to supply N naturally.
- Manure Injection Guidance: A new section offers specific soil sampling instructions for fields where manure has been injected. This technique accounts for predictable variations in N concentration to ensure accurate test results.
