PEEPS Invites Fans Inside the Factory for First Time
Pennsylvania Ag Connection - 01/11/2019

For the first time, the PEEPS brand is opening its factory doors to consumers while giving back through a partnership with the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley (UWGLV) with the launch of a nationwide sweepstakes. The PEEPS Helping Peeps Sweepstakes grand prize includes a trip for four to experience the ultimate behind the scenes tour at the PEEPS Factory, located in Bethlehem,. To enter, the PEEPS brand is encouraging fans to make a $5 or more donation to UWGLV that will go towards supporting community schools.

"Although we've had many requests and lots of fans show up at our doors over the years, the PEEPS factory has never been open to the public," said Matt Pye, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Just Born Quality Confections. "We couldn't think of a better reason to open our doors for the first time ever than by teaming up with our local United Way to help give back to the community that PEEPS calls home. The winner of our PEEPS Helping Peeps Sweepstakes will embark upon a once-in-a-lifetime tour of our factory and witness first-hand how our iconic PEEPS marshmallow is made, all while helping raise funds in support of important community enhancing programs."

United Way seeks to improve lives and community conditions by assessing the needs of the community, raising funds and investing in programs, measuring results, and mobilizing people to action. Just Born Quality Confections, the makers of PEEPS, is a third-generation family-owned business located within the Greater Lehigh Valley who values their roots by giving back to the community. Through the partnership with United Way, PEEPS will also help support education initiatives by raising funds for student programs, including programs to help raise children's reading scores.

"United Way just celebrated its 100th anniversary. It's a new century, and we've embraced a new way of helping our community," said David Lewis, president of UWGLV. "We are excited about this tremendous partnership with PEEPS, and are honored that such an iconic brand is helping us achieve our goals in our next century of giving back."

The PEEPS Helping Peeps Sweepstakes is open through April 8. As part of the entry, fans are encouraged to donate $5 to UWGLV by visiting unitedwayglv.org/peeps or by texting "peepsunited" to 40403. The grand prize winner will be notified on or about April 12 and will be announced at United Way's Day of Caring event on April 18.

Just Born Quality Confections is a third-generation, family-owned company. Just Born is the maker of some of America's most beloved and iconic brands -- PEEPS, MIKE AND IKE, HOT TAMALES and GOLDENBERG'S PEANUT CHEWS. In 1923, the founder, Sam Born, opened a small candy-making and retail store in Brooklyn, New York, where he marketed the freshness of his daily-made candy with a sign that declared, "Just Born." Together with Born's brothers-in-law, Irv and Jack Shaffer, the company thrived in spite of the economic depression of the 1930s and, in 1932, moved its operations to Bethlehem, PA, which is still home to their iconic candy brands. All Just Born candies are made in the United States.

The mission of United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley is to provide the leadership, convene the partnerships, and develop the resources and solutions that improve our community. We remain committed to these goals and sincerely appreciate the continued support of partners, program providers and donors throughout the Lehigh Valley.
