By Blake Jackson

The latest USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service report reveals Pennsylvania's hog and pig inventory as of March 1, 2025, stood at 1.47 million head.

This figure represents a slight increase of 1 percent compared to March 1, 2024, yet a 3 percent decrease from the previous quarter, December 1, 2024.

Specifically, the breeding inventory saw a decline, registering 145 thousand head, which is 3 percent lower than last year and 9 percent lower than the previous quarter.

In contrast, the market hog inventory reached 1.33 million head, showing a 1 percent increase from the previous year but a 2 percent decrease from the last quarter.

The pig crop from December 2024 to February 2025 totaled 598 thousand head, marking a 10 percent increase from the same period in 2024.

The number of sows farrowing during this period was 52 thousand head, a 13 percent increase from the previous year.

However, the average number of pigs saved per litter was 11.50, a 3 percent decrease compared to last year. These figures offer a detailed snapshot of Pennsylvania's hog and pig industry, highlighting both growth and challenges within the state's livestock sector.
