Grant Boost Helps Pennsylvania Potato Farm Grow

Grant Boost Helps Pennsylvania Potato Farm Grow

By Blake Jackson

Pennsylvania continues to invest in the future of agriculture through its Agricultural Innovation Grant Program, which helps modernize farms and create jobs.

Governor Josh Shapiro visited Sterman Masser Potato Farm to recognize the success of this initiative and highlight its economic impact.

Sterman Masser, a family-run business with a long history in farming, secured a $200,000 grant to purchase a high-tech, 8-row potato planter. This investment enables the farm to double its planting area from 1,000 to 2,000 acres, improve efficiency, and reduce fuel consumption.

The project marks a milestone for Pennsylvania, as this is the first time in 50 years the state will see an increase in potato planting acreage. The upgraded equipment is key to completing planting within Pennsylvania’s narrow seasonal window.

Governor Shapiro praised the initiative, saying, “Our farmers are the backbone of our economy here in Pennsylvania — they put food on our tables, in our stores, and in our restaurants every day. If we want to compete and succeed as a Commonwealth, then we have to invest in our ag economy.”

Sterman Masser’s facility is one of the largest potato processing operations in the Northeast and is well-known for its sustainable practices and fresh produce offerings, including a wide variety of potato types.

Dave Masser, the farm’s CEO, noted, “Investing in innovation keeps Pennsylvania growing for the next generation.” The planter ensures seed potatoes get the best start in ideal planting conditions.

Sterman Masser is one of 88 farms awarded funding from the $10 million program announced in February. The program supports infrastructure, technology, and sustainable practices. It drew over 159 applications requesting more than $68 million, reflecting broad interest from Pennsylvania’s agriculture sector.

With over 50,000 farms contributing $132 billion to the state’s economy, the Agricultural Innovation Grant Program plays a crucial role in supporting the long-term success of Pennsylvania’s farming industry.
