Capitol Hunger Garden Supports Pennsylvania Families

Capitol Hunger Garden Supports Pennsylvania Families

By Blake Jackson

Pennsylvania lawmakers recently launched the 15th season of the Capitol Hunger Garden, a key initiative to address food insecurity in Harrisburg and nearby communities.

Senator Elder Vogel Jr. and Representative Emily Kinkead, co-chairs of the bipartisan Hunger Caucus, gathered to highlight the role of the garden in offering fresh, local produce to families facing food challenges.

“Food insecurity affects all walks of life here in Pennsylvania,” said Sen. Elder Vogel, Jr. (R-47). “This garden continues to offer some immediate relief to those struggling with hunger in the Harrisburg area.”

Since its establishment in 2008, the Capitol Hunger Garden has become a symbol of hope. Last year alone, the garden produced over 727 pounds of vegetables and herbs including tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, Swiss chard, and more.

This year, plants were donated by the Pennsylvania Vegetable Growers Association, and the garden will be maintained by volunteers from Penn State Master Gardeners until October.

Rep. Emily Kinkead (D-20) emphasized, “The Hunger Garden stands as a physical embodiment of the mission of the Legislative Hunger Caucus – to combat hunger across the state, improve access to nutrition programs, and educate Pennsylvania legislators on food insecurity issues.”

The garden receives essential support from the Department of General Services, Penn State Extension, and dedicated volunteers.

This effort not only supplies food but also raises awareness of how collective action can help end hunger in Pennsylvania.
