What Happens in a World Without Cows

What Happens in a World Without Cows

By Jamie Martin

A new documentary is encouraging people to take a closer look at one of agriculture's most discussed topics: cattle and their role in the world. World Without Cows brings together voices from farming, science and environmental communities to explore how livestock production influences food systems, economies and sustainability.

The film is expanding its theatrical release following successful screenings in several major international cities and in North America to Kentucky, Missouri, Ohio, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Texas, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, North Dakota and Santa Barbara CA. Special showings are paired with panel discussions to create meaningful conversations among farmers, ranchers, researchers, educators, and consumers.

Produced after a five-year investigation spanning 22 countries and five continents, the documentary follows filmmakers Michelle Michael and Brandon Whitworth as they examine the relationship between cattle, food production and environmental responsibility.

Throughout the project, the filmmakers meet with producers, scientists, and agricultural experts to understand how cattle contribute to society. Their findings reveal that the discussion surrounding livestock production is often more complex than many people realize.

The documentary explores several important issues facing the agriculture industry today. These include climate change, food security, population growth, and the increasing demand for protein. It examines how cattle fit into these conversations and why their role continues to be debated worldwide.

By visiting locations across Asia, Africa, Europe, South America and North America, the filmmakers show how livestock production differs between regions. They highlight both the opportunities and challenges that farmers face while producing food for growing populations.

One of the central messages of the documentary is that agriculture cannot be understood through a single perspective. The film encourages audiences to consider scientific research, local conditions, and community needs when discussing the future of food production.

“Cows have become a symbol in the climate conversation, but the reality is far more complex. By exploring this issue from many angles and in such diverse geographies, the filmmakers give us a much more insightful and hopeful outlook than we might have expected,” said Executive Producer Mark Lyons.

The documentary also highlights the connection between cattle and rural economies. Many communities depend on livestock production for employment, economic activity, and long-term sustainability. The film demonstrates how farming operations contribute to local development while adapting to changing environmental expectations.

Environmental stewardship is another important topic covered in the documentary. Producers, researchers, and industry experts discuss how agricultural practices continue to evolve through innovation, improved management strategies, and advances in technology.

In addition to its educational message, the film aims to create dialogue. The theatrical screenings are designed to bring together people with different backgrounds and viewpoints. These conversations help encourage greater understanding between agricultural producers and the broader public.

“The journey showed us that there is no single simple solution to the world’s greatest challenges,” said filmmaker Michelle Michael. “I don’t think the world wants simple answers. It wants a better understanding of how our global food systems work, and that need has never been more urgent than it is right now.”

Available in more than 25 languages, World Without Cows is reaching audiences around the world. Its message focuses on learning, discussion, and the importance of considering all sides of complex agricultural issues.

As debates continue about the future of food production, the documentary provides an opportunity for viewers to explore how cattle influence food systems, communities and the environment. Its global perspective offers insight into agriculture's challenges while encouraging balanced and informed conversations about the future.
