USDA expands organic market data for farmers

USDA expands organic market data for farmers

By Blake Jackson

The USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) Market News has recently enhanced its offerings by incorporating price and production cost data for organic agricultural products, including organic milk, cattle, grains, and fertilizers.

This expansion aims to foster market transparency, empowering farmers and businesses in Pennsylvania and beyond to make well-informed decisions, ultimately contributing to a fairer, more competitive marketplace.

In 2024, AMS Market News has partnered with various state departments of agriculture and universities to broaden its collection and distribution efforts regarding organic products.

This includes the addition of farmgate organic milk prices specific to Pennsylvania, alongside other states like Vermont. The new reporting also covers production costs for organic poultry litter fertilizer in states such as Alabama, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.

Moreover, AMS Market News is extending its farmers market coverage to include regions in Pennsylvania, Iowa, New York, and California. This expansion will encompass organic specialty crops and dairy products, further supporting local farmers.

Additional enhancements are anticipated in 2025, with plans to expand market information for organic food and feed-grade grains, as well as feedstuffs.

These initiatives align with the 2018 Farm Bill, which allocated $5 million to the USDA for collecting and reporting data on organic agricultural products.

The USDA's ongoing commitment involves not only gathering and distributing pricing information but also conducting surveys related to organic production, handling, and distribution.
