Quirky Characters: Meet the Pigs With Personality at York State Fair

The York State Fair witnessed an explosion of joy and excitement as young exhibitors proudly displayed their Berkshire pigs, showcasing the vibrant personalities of these adorable creatures. The swine, known for living life to the fullest, didn't disappoint, stealing the hearts of onlookers with their carefree approach to life.

Emma Wilt, a seasoned pig enthusiast and exhibitor, couldn't hide her admiration for the Berkshires. She conveyed her enthusiasm for taking in the joyous demeanour of the pigs with the grand champion Berk in the junior show and a reserve champion title in her showmanship class. Emma, a mere ten-year-old, has been showing pigs for most of her life, finding joy in their charming antics.

Her fellow exhibitor, Dalton Brown, echoed the sentiment, describing pigs as "fun, creative, and adventurous." Dalton, a senior at Northeastern High School who is 17 years old, has been displaying pigs for seven years. For him, displaying these lively animals goes beyond impressing the agricultural community; it's about captivating the public's imagination.

The York State Fair's urban location offers a great chance for interaction with the public, particularly young people anxious to see farm animals. Dalton takes pride in introducing these city dwellers to the wonders of agriculture, fostering an appreciation for rural life.

Owen Beshore, who joined the pig-showing ranks more recently, shared how what started as a lighthearted endeavor turned into a passionate hobby. Having picked a pig from his family's feeder pigs last year on a whim, he won the reserve champion Berkshire gilt title at York. These days, Owen lavishes care on his pigs, ensuring they stay cool during the show with refreshing spritzes of water.

Despite the challenges of showing pigs, such as training them to respond to a show whip, these young exhibitors continue to celebrate the spirit of the Berkshires. Their dedication and love for these intelligent animals shine brightly as they make memories and inspire others to appreciate the wonders of agriculture.
