The 64th annual Pennsylvania State 4-H Horse Show is set to begin on October 24 at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex, running through October 27.

Open to the public, the event provides free admission and parking, welcoming equestrian enthusiasts to support young riders as they compete in a variety of events.

This year’s show brings together 800 participants from 60 counties, each showcasing skills developed through Pennsylvania’s 4-H horse programs. These youth riders have qualified by advancing through county and district competitions.

Andrea Kocher, Penn State’s equine Extension specialist, emphasizes that 4-H horse programs foster values like leadership, sportsmanship, and teamwork while enhancing self-confidence and a sense of community service.

Competitions at the show include a range of categories, such as showmanship, horsemanship, equitation, pleasure classes, and reining. The event also hosts a division for riders with special needs, ensuring inclusivity.

Class champions will receive ribbons, pewter plates, and embroidered champion jackets, while reserve champions receive gift certificates.

Around 850 horses will participate, representing a diverse selection of breeds, including Quarter Horses, Appaloosas, Paints, Morgans, and Arabians.

Events cover both English and Western styles and feature activities like barrel racing, pole bending, miniature horse jumping, and trail events.

The show isn’t only for riders. Non-riders can participate in the state 4-H Horse Show Photography Contest and the Equine Skillathon, which tests equine science knowledge.

Model horse enthusiasts can join the 25th annual Model Horse Show, where collectors showcase model horses and learn about equine history, tack, and breeds.

The Pennsylvania 4-H Horsemanship Skills Program is another highlight, offering youth a structured, progressive learning path. The program includes Levels 1 to 4, guiding participants through safe handling, horsemanship basics, and advanced riding skills.

This annual event is a true celebration of youth horsemanship, skill-building, and community, highlighting Pennsylvania’s commitment to developing young equestrians in a fun and educational environment.
