Hoof Trimmers Conference Returns To Pennsylvania

Hoof Trimmers Conference Returns To Pennsylvania

By Blake Jackson

The Hoof Trimmers Association (HTA) will host its 20th Hoof Health Conference from August 21 to 23 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, bringing together cattle hoof trimmers, farmers, researchers, and industry professionals.

The conference, held every 18 months, aims to enhance hoof care practices across the dairy and beef industries.

This year’s theme, “Changing the conversation in hoof care,” focuses on evolving practices while reinforcing time-tested hoof health principles.

Victor Daniel, HTA board member, said, “As an association, our goal is to build a better [hoof] trimmer to build a better foot from a better built cow.”

The three-day event will include educational seminars, live hoof trimming demonstrations using advanced chutes, and a facility tour of Tuffy Tables LLC on August 23.

Topics will range from digital dermatitis resistance and lameness detection to trimming frequency and genetic factors.

Participants can also register for an optional pre-conference trim day on August 20, led by Jason Charles and Steve Wunderlich. The hands-on event will offer additional skill-building opportunities.

HTA will unveil an updated version of its professional toolbox during the conference. Originally introduced in 2016, the toolbox now includes updated resources on biosecurity, communication strategies, in-house trimming, and animal welfare.

Daniel explained, “The toolbox is based on three primary principles, and each part of the toolbox has to meet these criteria - clarifying issues, simplifying solutions and improving communications between the trimmer and farmer.”

The HTA has supported the professional growth of trimmers since its first conference in 1990. Now averaging 100 attendees, the event continues to promote shared learning and innovation.

More information and registration details are available on the HTA website for those interested in attending and advancing their hoof care knowledge.
